The distinction that matters

A Mentor Has Done It. A Coach Has Studied It.

The words get used interchangeably, and they shouldn’t be. A coach draws out your own answers using a process — a good coach does this well and it has real value. A mentor gives you theirs, because they have already stood where you’re standing and paid for the lesson.

You can be an excellent coach without ever having run a business. You cannot be a mentor that way. Mentoring is the transfer of experience, and if there’s no experience to transfer, all you have left is the framework.

I’m Rob Ade. I’ve founded four businesses and successfully exited two, including an IT managed services provider that reached $5 million-plus in revenue with 24 staff and 160 clients, sold with no earnout. I’ve spent 27+ years in IT and 15+ years in digital marketing and e-commerce, and I’ve been mentoring other owners since 2006. I still run businesses today, which means my advice is current rather than remembered.

So when you describe a problem to me, you’re usually not describing something new. You’re describing something I have already got wrong once, at my own cost, and that is precisely what you’re paying for.

The other thing experience buys you is speed. A coach working from a framework has to take you through the framework. A mentor who has already lived your situation can usually name the real problem in the first session — the underpriced product line, the manager everyone is quietly working around, the supplier contract that auto-renewed three years ago. You skip the discovery phase and start fixing things.

Being mentored is not always comfortable. Part of the job is telling you the thing your business partner, your accountant and your family have all decided not to say. I do that plainly and without theatre, and then I help you deal with it. If you want to see how that plays out in practice, the why Rob page and the client reviews are the honest version.

Business Coach Or Business Mentor?

Plenty of good coaches operate in Melbourne and I’m not here to run them down. But if you have already tried a coach and come away feeling like you paid to be asked questions you had asked yourself, mentoring is probably what you were after in the first place.

How a typical coaching relationship differs from mentoring. Both have their place — the point is knowing which one you are buying.

What mentoring covers

What You Actually Get From Me

  • Fortnightly onsite sessions. In your business, in both calendars, so they happen even in a busy month.
  • An opinion, not a worksheet. You’ll get my view of what I’d do and why, along with what it cost me when I got it wrong.
  • 24/7 access between sessions. Decisions don’t wait a fortnight and neither should you.
  • The vetted rolodex. HR, legal, web, design and IT people I have actually used — ask me who I use. No trial and error, no referral commissions.
  • Six pillars, not one spreadsheet. Coaching, culture, customer service, cyber security, digital marketing and IT systems — the 6 Pillars are where the money actually leaks.
  • One flat monthly fee. No travel charges, no surprise invoices, no lock-in contract, cancel any time.
  • Someone who says no. If I don’t think I can add value to you or your business, I’ll tell you on the first call rather than take your money.

What Mentored Business Owners Say

★★★★★

Roberts service is exceptional; not good, EXCEPTIONAL when it comes to action and communication. He created a new website for me and although I will not know for a little while if it does everything we want, I am convinced and believe it will. No BS with Robert is accurate and I look forward to having Robert work on more projects into the future. Thank you Robert.

The best! Rob commits to what he says and really is the No BS coach a business needs. Always finding and encouraging new technologies, a great soundboard and motivator to push ahead. Would highly recommend Rob to anyone who needs to step into the next stage of business.

★★★★★

I’ve worked with Rob across several of my businesses over the years, and I can’t recommend him highly enough. He’s one of the true pioneers of the SEO industry, having been involved since the early days of websites and search engine optimisation. That depth of experience really shows in the results he delivers. Rob has helped improve the Google rankings and overall search engine visibility for multiple companies I’ve owned, leading to increased traffic, stronger online presence, and more enquiries. He’s incredibly knowledgeable, stays passionate about what he does, and is always focused on achieving long-term, sustainable results rather than quick fixes.

Melbourne and beyond

Mentoring In Melbourne, Onsite Every Fortnight

I’m based in Melbourne and I come to you. Onsite matters — half of what I notice happens while I’m walking through your business, watching how the phone gets answered and how your team talks to each other. You don’t get that on a screen.

I also travel to Sydney and Brisbane regularly, so interstate owners get in-person sessions when I’m in town and video in between — the Sydney page explains exactly how that runs. Melbourne owners who want the location-first version can read business coaching in Melbourne.

There is one flat monthly fee, quoted on the free call, with no travel charges and no lock-in. What that fee replaces is set out on the business coaching cost page, and the terms are on my guarantee page.

If you’re serious about the business and you want someone in your corner who has already done it, book the call. Thirty minutes, no charge, and you’ll know within ten of them whether this is a fit.

Business Mentoring Questions, Answered

What is the difference between a business coach and a business mentor?

A coach uses a process to draw answers out of you. A mentor gives you theirs, based on having already made the same decisions in their own business.

Both can be valuable. The practical test is simple: ask what they have personally built, run and sold. If the answer is a coaching practice and nothing else, you’re hiring a coach, not a mentor.

Which do I need — a coach or a mentor?

If you know what to do and struggle to make yourself do it, a coach and some accountability will get you there.

If you genuinely don’t know what to do — how to price a new line, when to hire, whether to take the acquisition offer — you need somebody who has faced it. That’s mentoring.

What qualifies you to mentor me?

Four businesses founded and two exited, including an IT managed services provider that grew past $5 million in revenue with 24 staff and 160 clients before I sold it with no earnout. It won an Australian Achiever Award for customer service along the way.

I also ran an SEO agency for eight years and I currently run an e-commerce subscription business and a managed IT and cyber security business. So the advice comes from businesses I am still operating, not businesses I remember.

Is mentoring a one-off session or ongoing?

Ongoing. The value compounds — by the third or fourth session I know your numbers, your people and your blind spots, and the advice gets sharper because of it.

That said, there’s no minimum term and no contract. You stay month to month for as long as it’s worth it.

Will you tell me what to do, or just ask questions?

I’ll tell you what I’d do and why, then let you decide. It’s your business and your risk, so the call is always yours.

What I won’t do is sit on an opinion to keep the relationship comfortable. If I think you’re about to make an expensive mistake, you’ll hear it plainly.

Do you mentor start-ups as well as established businesses?

Yes, though early-stage owners often get better value from the Business Networking Club until there is enough revenue to justify one-on-one mentoring.

If you’re pre-revenue and burning savings, I’ll say so on the free call and point you at the cheaper option. That conversation costs you nothing either way.

What happens on the free 30-minute call?

You talk, mostly. I want to hear where the business is, what’s actually bothering you and what you’ve already tried.

Then I’ll give you an honest read on whether I can help, where I’d start, and what the flat monthly fee would be. No slide deck, no follow-up sequence, no pressure.

Do you mentor businesses outside Melbourne?

Yes. Melbourne clients get fortnightly onsite sessions. Sydney and Brisbane owners get in-person sessions when I’m in town and video in between, and owners elsewhere in Australia work with me entirely by video.

The fee and the 24/7 access are identical wherever you are, and I never charge travel.
