A Small Business Coach Who Has Actually Run One
For owner-operators through to teams of twenty. No theory, no jargon, no lock-in.

Most Small Business Coaches Have Never Owned A Business
Search for a small business coach in Australia and you’ll find no shortage of people with a certificate, a proprietary framework and a slide deck. Far fewer of them have signed a lease, made payroll in a bad month, sacked someone they liked, or sold a business they built from nothing.
I’m Rob Ade. I’ve founded four businesses and successfully exited two of them — including an IT managed services provider that reached more than $5 million in revenue with 24 staff and 160 clients before I sold it with no earnout. I’ve been coaching owners since 2006, I’ve spent 27+ years in IT and 15+ years in digital marketing and e-commerce, and I still run businesses today.
That matters for one reason. Advice from someone who has only read about business falls apart the first time reality pushes back — when a key staff member resigns, when a big debtor goes quiet, when the marketing spend stops producing enquiries. I’ve already made most of those mistakes, at my own expense. Working with me, you get to skip them.
This page is about the coaching itself — who it suits, what we actually do and how the engagement runs. If you specifically want a coach who turns up at your office in Victoria, the business coaching Melbourne page covers how local engagements work. There’s also a full breakdown of my background on the about Rob page.

The Problems I Get Called In To Fix
Nobody hires a small business coach because everything is going well. These are the situations owners describe on the first call, almost word for word.
- The business is busy but there’s no money in it. Revenue is up, the bank balance isn’t. Usually a pricing or a job costing problem, not a sales problem.
- You are the bottleneck. Every decision, quote and complaint routes through you, so the business stops the moment you do.
- Staff keep leaving. You’re re-hiring and re-training the same role every few months and paying for it twice.
- Your marketing spend is a black hole. You’re paying an agency a retainer and nobody can tell you what it produced.
- Your systems are held together with spreadsheets. Double handling, missed jobs, and information that lives in one person’s head.
- You’ve plateaued. The business works, but it’s been the same size for three years and you don’t know which lever to pull.
- You want out eventually. You’d like to sell one day and you know the business isn’t saleable in its current shape.
- You’re lonely. Nobody in your life understands the pressure, and your team can’t be the people you vent to.
How it runs
What A Coaching Engagement Actually Looks Like
No mystery, no discovery workshop you have to pay for. Here is the whole process from first call to ongoing work.
- 1
A free 30-minute call
You tell me where the business is at. I tell you whether I can help and roughly where I’d start. If I don’t think I can add value, I say so on that call rather than selling you something.
- 2
A full look under the bonnet
We go through the business from the ground up — numbers, pricing, people, systems, marketing, customers and risk. Not just the P&L and balance sheet, because that is where most coaches stop.
- 3
A short list of things that actually matter
You’ll leave with three or four priorities, not a 40-page report. Big enough to move the needle, small enough that you can start this week.
- 4
Fortnightly onsite sessions
We meet every two weeks, in your business, and the meeting is locked into both calendars so it happens. We review what moved, unblock what didn’t, and set the next fortnight.
- 5
24/7 access in between
When something lands at 9pm on a Sunday, you don’t sit on it until the next session. You call. That is the part clients say they value most.
- 6
Stay only while it’s working
One flat monthly fee, no lock-in contract, no exit fee. If the value isn’t there, you cancel. That keeps me honest.

Who This Is For — And Who It Isn’t
I work best with owner-operators and owner-managed businesses — from a sole trader with a couple of contractors up to a team of around twenty. Big enough that the decisions are real, small enough that you can make one on Tuesday and see the effect by Friday.
The common thread isn’t industry, it’s attitude. My best clients are the ones who back themselves, take the hard feedback and then actually do the work between sessions. If you want someone to agree with you, I’m the wrong choice and I’ll say so early.
I’m also not the right fit if you want a coach who will run your business for you, or one who only ever talks about mindset. If your leadership team is the thing that needs work rather than the business itself, the executive coaching page is the better starting point. If you run a trade business, start with coaching built for tradies instead.
Industry-wise I’ve coached architecture, aviation, finance, IT, logistics, manufacturing, not-for-profit, pharmaceutical, real estate, recruitment and transport businesses, among plenty of others. The full list is on the industries page.

What Small Business Owners Say
Roberts service is exceptional; not good, EXCEPTIONAL when it comes to action and communication. He created a new website for me and although I will not know for a little while if it does everything we want, I am convinced and believe it will. No BS with Robert is accurate and I look forward to having Robert work on more projects into the future. Thank you Robert.
The best! Rob commits to what he says and really is the No BS coach a business needs. Always finding and encouraging new technologies, a great soundboard and motivator to push ahead. Would highly recommend Rob to anyone who needs to step into the next stage of business.
I’ve worked with Rob across several of my businesses over the years, and I can’t recommend him highly enough. He’s one of the true pioneers of the SEO industry, having been involved since the early days of websites and search engine optimisation. That depth of experience really shows in the results he delivers. Rob has helped improve the Google rankings and overall search engine visibility for multiple companies I’ve owned, leading to increased traffic, stronger online presence, and more enquiries. He’s incredibly knowledgeable, stays passionate about what he does, and is always focused on achieving long-term, sustainable results rather than quick fixes.
Coverage
Melbourne Based, Coaching Owners Australia-Wide
I’m based in Melbourne and most fortnightly onsite sessions happen here. I also travel to Sydney and Brisbane regularly, so interstate clients get a mix of face-to-face sessions when I’m in town and video sessions in between — see how that works on the Sydney business coaching page.
Owners further afield are coached entirely by video, and it works perfectly well as long as you turn up and do the work. What doesn’t change is the structure: same fortnightly rhythm, same 24/7 access, same flat fee, no travel charges.
If you want to know what that fee covers and what business owners typically pay elsewhere for the same ground, the business coaching cost page lays it out. And if you’d rather have a mentor who has run the businesses than a coach reciting a framework, read the business mentor page.

Small Business Coaching Questions, Answered
What does a small business coach actually do?
A good one gives you an experienced second opinion on the decisions that matter, keeps you accountable to the things you said you’d do, and points out the problems you can’t see because you’re inside the business every day.
In practice, we work across pricing and margin, cash flow, hiring and retention, systems and automation, marketing spend, customer experience and risk. Not just the numbers — the numbers are the symptom.
Is my business too small for a business coach?
If you’re paying yourself and someone else, you’re big enough. Some of the fastest results come from single-owner businesses because there’s nobody to talk you out of a good decision.
That said, if the business genuinely can’t carry a monthly fee yet, the Business Networking Club gives you mentorship and a room full of owners at a fraction of one-on-one coaching.
How long before I see results?
You should get something usable out of the very first session — a pricing change, a process to kill, a conversation to have. Structural change to cash flow or team performance usually takes a few months of consistent work.
Anyone promising you a transformation in a fortnight is selling you something. Anyone who can’t give you a single actionable thing in the first month isn’t worth the fee.
Do I have to be in Melbourne to work with you?
No. I’m Melbourne based with regular trips to Sydney and Brisbane, and I coach owners elsewhere in Australia by video.
The rhythm is the same wherever you are: a locked-in session every fortnight, plus contact whenever you need it in between.
Do you specialise in one industry?
No, deliberately. The mechanics of pricing, cash flow, hiring and systems are the same whether you sell socks or freight, and coaching across sectors means I bring solutions from one industry into another.
Where an industry has genuine quirks — trades, e-commerce, managed services — I’ve run businesses in them myself.
What do I need to have ready before the first session?
Nothing polished. Bring your last twelve months of numbers, a rough org chart even if it’s on a napkin, and an honest list of what you’re avoiding.
If your books are a mess, say so. That’s information, not a reason to delay the call.
Can you help me get the business ready to sell?
Yes. I’ve sold two of the four businesses I’ve founded, including one exit with no earnout, so I know what a buyer looks at and what quietly destroys a valuation.
Usually it comes down to reducing how dependent the business is on you, cleaning up systems and contracts, and making the numbers legible. That work takes time, so start it well before you want to sell.
What if I don’t like the advice?
You’ll get my honest opinion, which is the entire point of hiring someone called the No Bullshit Business Coach. You don’t have to take it — it’s your business and your call.
But if you routinely want reassurance rather than a straight answer, we’ll both waste our time and I’ll tell you that early.
